My Neighbor Totoro cream puff in Tokyo
There are many character concept cafes in Tokyo, and there are still many places I would like to visit.
The other day, I went to Studio Ghibli’s “My Neighbor Totoro” cafe. My Neighbor Totoro is my favorite movie ever since I was a kid.
Shiro-Hige’s cream puff factory
Totoro cream puffs are sold at a shop called “Shiro-Hige’s Cream Puff Factory”(白髭のシュークリーム工房). This is the only place in the world where you can buy Totoro cream puffs, so it is very popular with locals and tourists.
In addition, it is run by the younger brother of Hayao Miyazaki, the director of My Neighbor Totoro, and it is said to be a Studio Ghibli official cafe.
A 3-minute walk from Setagaya-Daita Station in Setagaya-ku, Tokyo.
This cafe is in a whole house and is located in a quiet residential area.
The first floor is a take-out cake shop and the second floor is the cafe.
I went there around 3pm on Saturday, but the takeout Totoro cream puffs were already sold out. In takeout, they were selling small cookies and baked sweets other than Totoro cream puffs.
Many people were waiting for the cafe, but I decided to wait because I could only have Totoro cream puffs at the cafe. I put my name on the waiting list of the cafe on the second floor and waited outside for about 30 minutes before they called my name.
The decoration of the store is cute and you can feel the world view of Totoro. Various Totoro goods were placed. In addition, the spiral staircase leading to the second floor had a retro and cute atmosphere.
Totoro’s cream puff seems to have different flavors depending on the season, and I was able to choose from 4 types on this day. I picked strawberry and caramel banana.
Totoro with a straw hat is caramel banana cream flavor, and one with cherry blossoms in the back is strawberry cream. I was hesitant to cut the cute Totoro, but I could not resist.
When I tried to eat it, the outside was dense but moist and filled with plenty of cream.
I thought it must be difficult to make Totoro-shaped cream puffs.
Cute and delicious sweets are the best.
Reservation for takeout and access
Shiro-Hige’s Cream Puff Factory also has a take-out store in Shimokitazawa. (This time, I visited Setagaya Daita store.)
Both the Setagaya Daita and the Shimokitazawa stores accept reservations for take-out cream puffs by phone. If you want takeout, I recommend making a reservation by phone. The staff speak Japanese, so it is recommended to have a Japanese speaker make the reservation.
Also, although it is only takeout, there are strawberry shortcakes and fruit tart with Totoro cream puffs on the top, so next time I would like to make a reservation for a special day.
